Where The Hearth Is By: Sandra Lee
CausewayEXchange is proud to announce the first Solo Exhibition in Malaysia by Malaysian born Singapore artist Sandra Lee from 1 – 30 August. Sandra Lee’s work has universal appeal. Lee’s work is largely influenced by fairy tales and characters born out of a vivid imagination emotionally anchoring her to her childhood, when her father, who used to be an English teacher, would read her tales and rhymes. “I looked at all these roly-poly ang moh (Caucasian) children with Mother Goose, and decided I would make them more relevant,” she says as she stands surrounded by her work. Panda bears peer down at a girl asleep on a sofa with oriental prints, a spoon runs away with a Chinese bowl, the old lady lives in a lotus shoe. The mixed references reflect Lee’s life. For those who like to get up close and personal with art, Lee’s works are more than satisfying. The detailed drawings, the sparing use of colour in her recent works and the characters that are sharply animated on canvas draw you into the artist’s life. It’s open to interpretation since fairy tales are the stuff of almost everyone’s life. The original tales were often masked messages aimed at political and social imbalances that could not be directly addressed for fear of reprisals. Via her oblique imagery, Sandra’s works address issues of housing a growing population and the role of women in society, relationships and other personal issues that she feels helps resonate with the viewer.
This exhibition is made possible with the support of Jada Art Gallery and Galeri Sogan.

Transit By: Edwin Koo
Edwin Koo’s exhibition is a series of photographs taken with the aim to “capture the daily theatre” of Singapore’s multi-racial passengers on board its Mass Rapid Transit (MRT) trains. Koo says, “ The MRT is special to me perhaps because I grew up beside a train station. I would watch the old trains pass by my window every day.” Feeling frustrated with the overcrowded trains during peak hours he started to photograph what he saw between the opening and closing of the train doors. Armed with a camera, the photographer becomes part of this drama, his presence triggering a series of reactions from the actors, beyond his control. His only response, which is to trip the shutter, is a gambit that hopes to reveal, through photography, the drama that we miss daily in the split seconds of each pair of closing doors. On his website Koo says that as commuters we observe an unspoken rule not to stare at each other’s misery but he breaks that rule by photographing the stare and continues to be amazed by what the stares reveal.

Music Of The South By: Siong Leng Musical Association
Siong Leng Musical Association was founded in 1941 to preserve, develop and promote Nanyin and Li Yuan opera. Nanyin, which literally means “The Music of the South”, can be traced back to the Han Dynasty (206BC-AD220) when it was originally performed as court music. In the 1970s, the association’s new chairman Teng Mah Seng sought to enhance the repertoire by composing several hundred new styles of lyrics which expanded and revolutionised the expressive range of an ancient musical art form. A tireless champion of Nanyin, Teng’s efforts to revive the art form included the organization of a Southeast Asian Nanyin Conference in 1977. In 1983 the group participated in the 37th Llangollen Musical Eisteddfod in Wales and won Third Prize in Folk Song Solo and Fourth Prize in Ensemble Performance. Four years later in 1987, Teng received the Cultural Medallion, Singapore’s highest honour for artists, for his work in the field of music. In 2010, the association took part in the Llangollen International Music Eisteddfod once again, and claimed 1st place with a new song composed by Teng Mah Seng, entitled Facets of Life. For the first time in Nanyin history, the musical form won an international award and marked its arrival at the world stage. Committed to keeping the ancient art form of Nanyin music alive in today’s multicultural, technologically progressive Singapore, the association has reached out to schools to educate the younger generation about Nanyin. Over the past few years, it has also sent selected talents for training in China to raise performing standards, to stage and produce high and diverse programme, establishing Siong Leng’s professional standing. Weaving Nanyin into the fabric of a hectic, fast changing city, Siong Leng hopes to procure a space to grow and flourish.

Short Film Installation By: Sherman Ong
Sherman Ong ‘s exhibition encompasses a series of 9 video vignettes. The concept of the artists exhibition is adapted from his body of works which always centres on the South East Asian region. Fables of the Nusantara is about mapping the notion of the Nusantara, mingling myths and fables with contemporary stories and dilemmas about migration and diaspora. Nusantara is an Indonesian term for the Indonesian archipelago originating in Old Javanese and literally meaning “archipelago”. The exhibition hopes to amalgamate the past histories with the contemporary stories about the region that traverse the notions of origin, diaspora and migration with the personal and the intimate stories of peoples whose ancestors have arrived into the region from different times through different waves of migration. The stories and moving images will also map the past myths and fables into the contemporary through the format of the creative documentary, exploring the documentary as a truth fallacy in anthropology/ethnographic studies.

Abaut Zak
Papi Zak is definitely the “biggest” stand-up comedian in Malaysia. Unafraid to tackle issues of race, sex, and Malaysian family values, his stories boil down to the most familiar, relatable experiences he’s had. He is a gut-grabbing performer who has no qualms about opening his mouth and letting all manner of things fly out. Papi Zak was also the host for Lite FM’s morning show “The Lite Breakfast with Zak & Sara” for 3 years and on REDfm’s “The Late Late Breakfast Show with Papi & Grumpy”.
