PAUL MOSS IS A FREAK - Episode 2
The best thing I liked about episode 2 was the opening gambit by the rapper who said "Kick Paul Moss' Butt" in hushed tones. Absolutely loved that. But the one that really had me rolling in stitches was the "Aiyoh. This Paul Moss Is A Freak" comment uttered by the 7 year old looking 17 year old to Marion & Awal right after going through the washer with the judges. That line alone was worth a million RM. Looks like he turned the tables on Uncle Paul. What a hoot. Good on you lad after all that cheesy crap Paul put you through.
So did the show get any better? Well, lets just say there is a glimmer of hope.
Well, at least in Russell Curtis of Curtis Blues. Do we have another Jaclyn Victor here? I wouldn't be surprised at all. Paul was spot on when he said that Curtis played a mean guitar. And this "thambiĀ”" sure can belt it out vocally as well. I am thinking a brand new Paul Ponnudurai here. If he makes it into the top 12, he is definitely getting my vote.
Faisal Tahir, seen hosting the Commonwealth Games show recently, certainly looks promising enough too. As was the 16 year old social conscious Alif. Charity does go a long way buddy.
And I was more than happy to see someone finally doing a decent rendition of Gemilang. Is this Suki Low by any chance?
I was also very impressed with the sweet looking head scarved Yunalis, not because she sang reasonably well, but she had the musical knowledge to know that a song like Queen's Bohemian Rhapsody will truly showcase someone's vocal talent. After all singing rock is not all about shouting & screaming. Freddy Mercury eventually went on to do opera as well.
The most interesting scene from Episode 2 was when Janet (the sultry & pouty Chinese girl who sang opera) asked Paul Moss, "Do you have something to say to me?" while gently cupping & stroking the mike in an all too familiar manner (honestly, this part was highlighted to me by the very observant Mrs. Dragon, and was 100% confirmed upon watching the repeat). Hmm, Paul. What do you have to say about that? Something we shouldn't know? LOL.
It's obvious Paul has a big thing for sweet Chinese girls. Everytime one walks in he gushes. Take the moment when gorgeous Cindy walked in & Paul perks up and goes "The day has just started" and also guitar playing Ching to whom he commented "you look like a doll" & subtly whispered "I am in love" to Syafinaz. Both were not brilliant but they looked promising enough.
The parade of stars didn't really unfaze me and I am certain some of the amateur contenders will whip some of the professional's butts as the show progresses. I was reasonably impressed with Nine of PB. But I was less than impressed with Dayang though. No doubt she is a fabulous singer but her rendition of "Where Do Broken Heart Go" was hardly uplifting. And how come for such a seasoned pro like her, she could not reply Paul's question back in English? She wants to "spread her wings" and go international but is still struggling with the global language? Hmm. Better spend a portion of that RM 1 Million (if you win it) on language lessons.
The other good news is Syafinaz doesn't need to audition for any horror movies this week, having lost her PHSM demeanour, for which we are so very glad.
The real surprise here was that the producers did not choose to feature Atilia's (who was also interviewed lengthily), Ozie's & Joshua Ambrose's auditions in this show. A little birdie told me that the folks at 8TV were not pleased because some of the contestants chose to express themselves in the forums, and were apparently spoiling the surprises in the show. What big surpriseslah? Especially when the station itself puts out press releases that list down all the qualifiers as well as telling the world through the media that Dayang made top 20, before the show even airs. Most of the stuff about the other stars who qualified are also readily available in the press and their respective websites. Its no big secret and nothing discussed in the preliminary rounds is a big spoiler. Please note that experienced forumers here at Rentak Sejuta & at Blue Hyppo will not be spilling the beans when the time comes. We are not the tabloid press and know how to keep the suspense for the others. Please do not penalize the contestants just because they were helping to promote the show online.
All in all, I am not terribly disappointed this week as I was last week. At least I got to see myself on TV. LOL. I am looking forward to the Central Eliminations episode next week. Here's where the difference lies as opposed to the previous reality shows. Let's hope it's the bomb.
