Kimbra
Kimbra’s latest release, The Golden Echo, is a vivid, vivacious, and ambitious arc of pop and funk, youthful exuberance and mature introspection, altogether conveying an array of questions and insights. Front and center are Kimbra’s own considerable talents as a songwriter, musician, programmer and singer. The ingredients behind The Golden Echo according to the New Zealander: Supremely talented collaborators, Greek mythology, and a small sheep farm in the middle of Los Angeles. Kimora found the sheep farm and escaped there the day after the 2013 Grammys, fresh off the heels of her ear-turning role on Gotye’s international hit “Somebody That I Used To Know.”
“I’d been caught up with all the Grammy and Gotye stuff happening, and the touring, the constant affirmation— or praise, or criticism, or self-reflection— everywhere,” she says. “You get wrapped up in it. Then here I was chilling with a bunch of sheep. And they don’t give a crap who you are. You’re not special to them. You spend time with them and there’s this beautiful kind of harmony of how everything works in that environment. It was a really great space to create.”
Why not take a leaf out of her book? Just like Kimbra, you too can escape the madness of Klang Valley along with the best of us, and spend a day up in the highlands of Genting at Urbanscapes. It might be more inspiring than you expect.

Local Natives
Local Natives is an indie rock band based in Silver Lake, Los Angeles, USA. Their debut album, Gorilla Manor, was first released in the UK in November 2009. They released Hummingbird, their sophomore album on January 29th, 2013. From rave reviews to brilliant television performances, Gorilla Manor launched the band onto the global stage, saw them headlining theaters throughout America and Europe, opening for bands like Arcade Fire and The National, and winning them lauded slots at major festivals around the world.
Upon their return home from the road, the band built out a rehearsal space and studio in an abandoned bungalow in Silverlake, allowing them to write and experiment extensively with new sounds and arrangements. Keeping their uniquely collaborative process intact, this ultimately led to the band utilizing new instruments and songwriting approaches, challenging themselves to grow from the comfort space of their established aesthetic.

Jagwar Ma
Jagwar Ma came to life almost three years ago in the hands of Jono Ma and Gabriel Winterfield. The Sydney-based duo first met onstage at an FLRL stage performance of revolving musicians. They knew of each other at the time, and found good reason after their shared stage experience to keep the collaboration going into studio jams, home recordings, radio frequency manipulation, TR808 patterns, MPCs loops, vintage amps, and a treasured 7 inch collection. Having found a soul in and amongst all that electricity, Jagwar Ma has been described as sounding like J-Dilla playing Primal Scream covering the Beatles.
The song that kicked it all off was “Come Save Me”, a celebration of love and loss that saw human harmonies sliced apart by a dagger of sharp contemporary programming. This cross between voice and electronics was to become a Jagwar Ma signature. And it was this sound that they brought across festival circuits at Reading and Leeds, Glastonbury, Pukkelpop, Latitude, Bestival, Paredes de coura, The Big Day Out, Splendour in the Grass among others. Urbanscapes is proud to join these festivals in Jagwar Ma’s performance history this December at Genting. Will you be part of it?

The Lemonheads
You know the track, “Mrs Robinson”, not the Simon & Garfunkel original, but the legendary American college rock hit by The Lemonheads. Well, get ready to rock out with them this Urbanscapes. The Lemonheads was formed by Evan Griffith Dando with two high school buddies in late winter ’86, in their senior year at Boston’s tiny Commonwealth School. A few months later, they spawned what is now one of the most sought-after punk relics of the 80s, the indie EP Laughing All the Way to the Cleaners.
The Lemonheads line up had been volatile: more than a dozen different configurations over a period of just five years, all sorts of bit parts and reshuffles, with Dando as the only constant. A 1991 tour brought Evan to Australia, where by chance he met songwriter Tom Morgan and future Lemonheads bassist Nic Dalton. Their collaboration made all the difference for the next Atlantic release, It’s a Shame About Ray (1992), a concentrated blast of pure pop perfection that clocks in at just under 30 minutes. Thanks to songs such as “Confetti”, “My Drug Buddy”, “Rudderless”, and “Ceiling Fan in My Spoon”, Dando hit a whole new audience (“they’re getting younger,” he confessed to Kathie Lee Gifford at the time). This was followed by a cover of Simon and Garfunkel’s “Mrs. Robinson”, which eventually became one of the band’s most successful singles.
The Lemonheads were active until 1997 before going on hiatus, but reformed with a new lineup in 2005 and released The Lemonheads the following year. The band released its latest album, Varshons, in June 2009. Filled with obscure nuggets, the tracks on Varshons cut a wide swath, jumping from early British psychedelic to Dutch electronica and like all good mix tapes, you never know what is coming next.

Najwa Mahiaddin
It all started with a shade of black, and then there was no turning back. A multiple award winning singer-songwriter, New York based Najwa is returning from her three year hiatus with a darker undertone in her music, experimenting with somber and minimalistic echoes over the usual warm piano accompaniments. Thus the Aurora EP is born- her sounds shamelessly stripped down into a bare electronic setting, her soul’s deepest shadows unveiled.
Perhaps it was the barren winters of Boston, having spent the last three years pursuing her music degree at Berklee College of Music. Switching her playlist from Jill Scott, Erykah Badu and Billie Holiday to the likes of Little Dragon and James Blake while braving the isolated icy paths far away from home may have had a little something to do with it. A drastic departure from her debut R&B/neo-soul album Innocent Soul back in 2011, Aurora seeks to reaffirm her Malaysian roots by blending traditional elements from her heritage with a more current soundtrack. Najwa’s first single off Aurora, “Seri Mersing”, boldly weaves the ancestral ghazal folk song into a contemporary orchestration- intimating a sacrilegious cultural intercross of the old and new. The bonus track is set for release this February, followed by the EP release in March.

Kyoto Protocol
Not to be mistaken for members of Greenpeace, Kyoto Protocol are a five-piece outfit based in Malaysia who kick-started a renaissance of Rock & Roll in Malaysia. It was formed by a core of long- time friends who decided to see how far they could go as musicians. Since their humble beginnings playing covers in local bars in 2009, the band reached a turning point when they unexpectedly won 2nd place in the Yamaha Asian Beat Malaysian Finals. It was not long until they got heads turning and ears listening with their no-holds-barred amalgamation of punk, rock and roll when they opened for MGMT’s maiden KL concert.
In 2011, the band released its debut album which was aptly titled “An Album”. This release was a local success as singles “Pussycat” and “Never Know” clinched the number 1 spot on various radio charts on the Malaysian airwaves. The success of “An Album” snowballed when the band was nominated for “Best New Artist” in Anugerah Industri Muzik 2011. This was soon followed by another nominated for “Breakout Award” in the Shout Awards 2012.
They rode this wave to score spots at regional festivals in Malaysia and abroad such as Baybeats in Singapore, BeastieRock in Taiwan, Rockaway and Urbanscapes in Malaysia. This paved the path for them to play a coveted slot at Future Music Festival Asia 2013, where they performed on the same stage as other international acts such as FUN., Bloc Party, The Temper Trap, and PSY. This particular performance yielded favourable reviews from the media that suggested that the band held its own, even on a stage with Grammy nominees and YouTube record-breakers.

Enterprise
Based in Subang Jaya, Malaysia, Enterprise made their first public appearance in 2011 after their rehearsal session on Youtube gained attention from promoters and organizers. Since then, they have played in music festivals, parties and shows including 8TV’s Big 8 Bash 2011, Fred Perry Malaysia’s Subsonic Secret Rooftop Party 2012, Fred Perry Singapore’s Sub Sonic Live alongside Ra Ra Riot, Anechois, these Brittle Bones (Chris Jones) 2013 and the first ever Future Music Festival Asia back in 2012.
In 2012, the band released their first ever single “LHFT” (Let’s Have Fun Tonight), which was featured in Projek Pop episode 8th (a local TV series) and their very latest “On A Mission” featured in JUICE mix tape. They made their Urbanscapes debut in 2012 and will take flight once again this 6 December. Enter Enterprise.

OJ Law
OJ Law’s catchy melodies and arrangements have won him much critical acclaim and an ever-increasing fan base falling for the charms of his music. And we’re excited to have him at Urbanscapes.
Singlehandedly writing recording and producing his songs, the multi-talented singer/ songwriter/ producers has released three albums to date. His breakout 2011 album, “Yesterday is a Distant Dream”, a soulful indie rock/electronica album featured heavyweight pop songs like ‘Fantastic Adventure’ (feat Liyana Fizi) and ‘Start/Stop’. It was awarded Timeout KL’s Malaysian Album of 2012 and was also a Deezer ‘Best of 2012’ pick. After three years of recording, OJ Law returned in 2014 with ‘Tongue-Tied’, a slice of disco-house tinged with crunchy guitars and filled with swooning strings, infectious guitar licks and unforgettable vocal hooks.
Launched alongside a music video featuring robots and romance, ‘Tongue-Tied’ is currently receiving airplay on FlyFM, Hitz.FM, CapitalFM, Red FM, and IM4U. ‘Tongue-Tied’ signals an exciting direction for OJ Law, currently finishing up his long-awaited new album, due for release in October this year.
Entitled ‘Let’s Be Adult’, the album signals an exciting change of direction. Influenced by 70s pop and contemporary synth-pop, ‘Let’s Be Adult’ is an autobiographical album containing OJ Law’s most personal songs to date.

June Marieezy
You, me and June Marieezy at Urbanscapes. Making her Kuala Lumpur debut this Urbanscapes, June will deliver her melodies, smooth voice, and lyrical heart songs through a performance that channels part performance arts, part visuals and a whole lot of interesting sound manipulations. All the way from the Phillipines, June has shared the stage with renowned talents including Jose Gonzales and Roy Ayers. If she feels like it, she may just play the flute, which she says is like having a dialogue with the wind. An apt performance to look forward to considering she’ll play at a venue in the clouds.

Kuah Jenhan
How apt! Kuah Jenhan standing in a Ranch. If you haven’t seen this standup comic deliver his comedic curveball yet, Urbanscapes is your chance. In the last five years, Jenhan has performed at sold-out shows for paying audiences in Malaysia, Melbourne, Brisbane, Sydney and Hong Kong and Singapore. Selling out his last four solo shows, he is a highly sought after entertainer at corporate events, having performed for intimate groups of ONE to crowds of 8,000 people. His brand of humour and performance ethics has found the respect and accolades of some of the most experienced comics in Malaysia and in the region.
Jenhan is also a columnist with Esquire magazine, a radio and voice over talent, a script-writer for TV, feature films, and in the performing arts. A master of multitasking, he is currently working on his international tour and fifth solo show slated for 2015, tending to his cat, and making speeling mistakes.

Cashew Chemists
Cashew Chemists is a rock band from sunny Singapore. Consisting of Yuji Kumagai (vocals), Brian Chia (guitar), Elliot Sng (bass) and Zachary Chia (drums), Cashew Chemists is heavily influenced by pop-rock music of the ‘60s and ‘70s. Upon the release of their first demos ‘What She Said’ and ‘Road Trip’ in late 2011, the group quickly caught the attention of local critics for their authentically revivalist sound and clever songwriting. The band was selected to perform at two of the region’s largest indie music festivals, Baybeats and IGNITE in 2012. The band went on to make airwaves performing live on 98.7FM “Home”. The band has also appeared in major publications such as TODAY, The Straits Times and JUICE. In June 2012, the group released its acclaimed first single, ‘Common Equation’.
They have been working on new material this year and they are eager to enchant you with their dreamy songs and jazzy harmonies on top of twiddling surf guitar and classic bluesy bass at Urbanscapes.

The Cotton Field Scarecrowes
The Cotton Field Scarecrowes is a Malaysian indie folk band formed in late 2013. Led by vocalist/guitarist Johann Sultan, who fashioned the earthy tone of Americana in honour of such perennial sounds of early American folk right up to the modern cut of retro styled music. Marrying pop and classic folk. Started of as a duo band by the Sultan brothers, TCFS is now joined by bassist Damian Xavier and drummer Praveen Mathews.
Their debut album “Dancing Hymns And Broken Rhymes” which was released late last year embraces what they call ‘The Bleak Folk Hymnody’. The album was mastered by Ed Brooks (Seattle, WA).
Tracks on this album were mostly recorded live, and the finishing is blanketed with long play textures. This is to give listeners the vinyl experience anytime, anywhere. On 6 December, you’ll be able to experience their Americana folk tunes live on the grassy pasture of Genting Horse Ranch.

Azmyl Yunor & Orkes Padu
Azmyl Yunor & Orkes Padu is a new band spearheaded by local underground folk icon Azmyl Yunor and beat guru Raje, the band leader of Orkes Padu (‘solid orchestra’). After the dissolvent of the hard touring Azmyl Yunor & the Sigarettes, the remaining active members of the group got cracking on new songs by Azmyl. With drummer and producer Raje at the helm of a new album titled “Was Was” (due to arrive sometime in 2015), they forge ahead with a new ‘padu sound’ with a live line-up consisting of seasoned musicians from the Malaysian independent and underground music scene. If their debut single and video ‘Tanah Air Ku’ – released on Malaysia Day – is any indication,”Was Was” looks set to be one of the key albums to watch out for in 2015. Experience a toe-tapping technicolor sonic embodiment of the plaintive yet heartfelt heartland storytelling from one of Malaysia’s best at Urbanscapes. Modern folk rock to celebrate the Malaysian spirit!

Arthur Lamon Studio
An iPad cover as old as a colonial Kopitiam? A bench that once supported a 100-year-old Penang shophouse? 25-years-old Penang-based Belgian product designer Arthur Lamon can make it happen. From small jewellery, total redesigns of shops, and all kinds of wacky ideas people come up with, Arthur is able to make them all using reclaimed wood from old shophouses and scrap wood from local factories. His main goal is to display the beauty of wood in a simple but useful way, resulting in a variety of everyday products which are a design statement, even when they are not in use. If you haven’t seen his work, which range sells in a variety of shops around Malaysia and Singapore, come meet him at Urbanscapes this year.

Ali Aiman
Ali Aiman isn’t just another name. A self-made brand synonymous with musical artistry, the Malaysian-born multi-instrumentalist has been strutting his stuff since 2006. The musician’s mastery of the piano and trumpet has earned him industry-wide recognition.
While a picture of refined skill, the twenty-six-year-old today re-enters the local music scene after six years of living abroad, new and improved. His comeback marks the rise of an upcoming artiste. What was once a predominantly behind-the-scenes operation has stepped out from behind the curtains to reveal a show worthy of applause. The progression from producer to singer-songwriter is the epitome of dreams fulfilled.
A rare breed, his original productions illuminate his ability to produce and mix his own music; a skill highly regarded by the fraternity. His success is attributable to the Berklee College of Music where he finished with 1st Class Honours in Contemporary Writing and Production. Since his enrolment at the school in 2008, he’s cultivated the art of orchestration, arranging, composition, jazz piano performance and music production under the tutelage of A-list professionals.
His Urbanscapes debut is one you’d want to catch this December.

Faiq & The Manja Mob
A physiotherapist, copywriter, financier, and two other flers walk into a bar. They start singing. That’s pretty much the extent of the joke, but after all, it may not be surprising that five workaholics joining musical forces is serious business. Faiq & The Manja Mob may not have any original material (yet), but get ready to be seduced by muscles, magic, multiple languages, and strange musical choices. Between Faiq’s crooning and the sweet tinkling sounds of the ukulele blowing over the ranch — where Urbanscapes will be held this year — we’re certain this cover band will put up an unforgettable experience.

The Generalist
The creative collective The Generalist will return this year to Urbanscapes with “Market of Experiences” (MOE), a cross borders, multi-experiential market that will invite folks everywhere to explore their senses in ways that are atypical at festivals. Walk through this market and expect to to be surprised; uncap little stories that tumble out of a dispenser you remember from your childhood. Send a stranger a dream you once had with the Dream Catcher. Let go of your anxieties by doing what your mother told you never to do — smash glassware just for fun. And if you believe fate lies in the stars, ask a Singapore Poetry Slam Winner to improvise a poem inspired by tarot cards of your choice.
The Biji Biji
The Biji Biji Initiative is a Social Enterprise. Their mission is to champion sustainable living, minimize the carbon footprint and leave a positive social and environmental impact. By creating a platform for youth to explore sustainable design concepts, they hope to reduce some of Kuala Lumpur’s urban waste.
Through the use of green technology, waste management methods, and creative ways to reuse trash, Biji Biji aims to inspire a society that is accountable for their waste and leaves a minimal impact on the environment. By reusing discarded materials, the initiative creates upcycled products, structures and art installations. This helps to raise awareness about the value of ‘waste’!
Biji Biji works in an inclusive and collaborative way. They believe collaboration is superior to competition and it’s the best way to really innovate. At their Open Workshop, interested groups or individuals are welcome to participate in their projects and to design and prototype new ideas. Biji Biji believes that two ideas are better than one hence why all of their designs are available to the public to replicate and innovate.

Paperplane Pursuit
Formed in 2009, the band features John O on vocals and keys, Dr/ummer on drums and Isaac on guitars. In early 2014, the band released a self-produced single called ‘Beat Of Your Love’, a collaboration with fellow Malaysian musician and DJ, Darren Ashley portraying their fierce independence and DIY capabilities in the production of their music and their videos.
Paperplane Pursuit recently released their second album titled ‘Higher’ along with a follow up single ‘Feel Good’. The single was released with another self produced music video that features some of the most recognisable faces in the local entertainment scene. The boys have been on a string of radio and TV interviews, as well as live shows to promote the single, including being a featured artist in the Amplified : Music Made of More series by Guinness.
The band is actively exploring new ideas and technologies to spread their music and expand their reach. Catch them at Urbanscapes and feel good with Paperplane Pursuit!

Jumero
Jumero, a young, laid-back acoustic trio consisting of Jared Lim, Michael Lim and Ryan Gomes made their debut at Urbanscapes back in 2012 after winning The Star R.AGE open-mic competition. Since then, they have played at multiple music festivals, events, and venues such as the Island Music Festival 2013, Indie PG 2013, and the recent Guinness Amplify 2014.
The trio harmonizes their way through their original songs and arrangement on cover songs. Apart from their passion of writing and releasing original songs, the trio also enjoy covering current as well as older classic songs whilst adding their personal touch to it.
Currently, Jumero is working on their 5 track EP at Starmount Studios and are planning on releasing it at the end of 2014. Expect new material by the trio at Urbanscapes!

TerryandTheCuz
TerryandTheCuz strives to write, create and design intelligent, humorous, passionate, visceral performance art that reflects and engages with our changing society, and to attracting newer and more diverse audiences to the theatre. They are constantly looking to develop and extend their collaborative performance-making practice with artist both local and abroad.
In this Urbanscapes, they will take the crowd to ‘The Democractic People’s Republic of North Bangsar’, a mock parody country with a back story that is laugh-out-loud hilarious — and perhaps, plausible. North Bangsar offers an experience much like walking onto a film set. Festival goers get to meet Mayor Kuah Jenhan and explore the town, get a ‘prescription’ from a Chinese Medicine Hall and participate in the ‘local’ activity of choice — real serious bolster fight skirmishes.

Dirgahayu
From the ashes of Akta Angkasa and Custom Daisy, Dirgahayu first emerged in July 2013 as a 3-piece instrumental math rock outfit. The band hit the scene with a single release Bahawasanya: 4 minutes of organised chaos, robust guitar attacks, and exuberant drum beats punctuated by intense abrupt transitions. In conjunction of their nationwide tour last year, directed by Carlos Nizam and Khairul Johari, Bahawasanya’s music video was released with compelling positive reviews from all over the region. Shot with a DSLR on burst, the resulting effect is a staccatolike rhythm of stop motion filming from a bird’s eye view.
With the recent addition of Seikan Sawaki on drums and Zulhezan back on guitar duty, expect their sound dynamics to turn more progressive, odd-signature compositions greeted with dense guitar riffs and a new foray of sound. The band has a Japan tour lined up and a full-length album expected in 2015.

In 2012, the band released their first ever single “LHFT” (Let’s Have Fun Tonight), which was featured in Projek Pop episode 8th (a local TV series) and their very latest “On A Mission” featured in JUICE mix tape.

Formed in 2009, the band features John O on vocals and keys, Dr/ummer on drums and Isaac on guitars.
