Understanding Swaraa
Three sisters. Individual tastes, preferences and varying hobbies, but in music, they merge harmoniously, and in melody, they unite.
Swaraa comprises sisters Sujitra, Sumitra and Subatra who are well-versed in Carnatic music – the classical music of South India.
The sisters, whose musical chronicle started at the very tender age of 2, completed their arangetram in 2004 under the guidance of their revered guru the Late Mrs Vijayalakshmi Kulaveerasingam, who was a prominent ‘guru’ in Carnatic music in the country and who was also a renowned violinist.
Over the years, the sisters became established performers in the Malaysian music circuit and received numerous accolades and honours, including becoming Gold Medalists of the National Thirumurai Competition – a prestigious annual event that recognises the excellence of young aspiring musicians.
This sound background made Swaraa ideal musicians for the groundbreaking devotional album Tulasi which rejuvenated the Malaysian music industry with their brand of reggae-fused Carnatic music. Tulasi’s debut album remains a bestseller to this day – racking up a sale of 180,000 units in Malaysia alone and was marketed successfully in England, Mauritius and Fiji. The sisters subsequently produced an album called VRNDA in 2007. The sisters were also invited to perform in a special programme “Isaiyil Ithanai Niranggalaa” with Haresh Ragavendra produced by Astro. In that programme which featured local artistes of various genres, they were chosen to represent the Classical fusion genre. The sisters have also performed with other leading Indian singers like Srinivas and Hariharan. In the year 2005, one of the sisters, Subatra, was handpicked by a panel of judges from thousands of applications as one of the participants for the Indian Music Training 2005 conducted in Astro by Mr. Bharadwaj, a renowned Music Director from India. Following the training, she was selected by Mr Bharadwaj himself as the head teacher for the Astro Indian Music Training 2006. Subatra has also been trained personally by the great vidhwan Guru Madhurai G.S.Mani (Sangeetham) and Guru Unni Mannur (Western Classical) of India.
The Swaraa Sisters, in the year 2003 founded Sugam Karnatica, a not-for-profit organisation which is dedicated to the promotion and preservation of arts and culture, and finds ways to fuse them in today’s advanced world of technology and modernization. It offers lessons in Classical Arts; conducts cultural camps, workshops, conferences; organises concerts and outreach programs.
In November 2012, their album Vrnda was awarded the ‘Best Vocal Group’ by the US Global Music Awards. In 2013, the sisters started the year by recording a song with Padmasri Hariharan in his latest album, ‘Just In Love’.
In 2014, the sisters were invited to sing a devotional album entitled ‘DEIVEEGA RAGAM’. The album was produced and launched in Tamil Nadu and is now available in Malaysia. Of recent, the sisters have started performing out of Malaysia to broaden their horizons.
The name “Swaraa’ symbolises the basis of carnatic music, the seed of a blossoming music tree. Being 100% Malaysian, the girls are pleased that it coincidentally also sounds like ‘Suara’ which means Voice in Bahasa Malaysia.
