Lee Ritenour & Friends
Growing up in L.A. in the 60′s, Grammy award winning guitarist Lee Ritenour received a rich cross section of exposure to jazz, rock and Brazilian music. From one of his first sessions at 16 with the Mamas and Papas to accompanying Lena Horne and Tony Bennett at 18, his forty year eclectic and storied career is highlighted by a Grammy Award win for his 1986 collaboration with Dave Grusin, Harlequin; 17 Grammy nominations; numerous #1 spots in guitar polls and the prestigious “Alumnus of the Year” award from USC. He has recorded over 40 albums, with 35 chart songs, notably the Top 15 hit “Is It You,” which has become a contemporary jazz radio classic. In the 90s, Ritenour was a founding member of Fourplay, the most successful band in contemporary jazz, with keyboardist Bob James, bassist Nathan East and drummer Harvey Mason. The first Fourplay album in 1991 spent an unprecedented 33 weeks at No. 1 on Billboard’s contemporary jazz chart. Adding to this legacy is his latest CD Smoke ‘n’ Mirrors; the recently completed Grammy nominated recording Amparo, (a follow-up with Dave Grusin to their highly-successful 2001 Grammy Award nominated contemporary classical crossover CD) and producer of Gordon Goodwin’s Big Phat Band’s latest CD Act Your Age (which is nominated for 3 Grammys.
It’s been a long road since the seventies, when Ritenour’s legendary Tuesday night appearances at the famed Baked Potato, with a band including Dave Grusin, Patrice Rushen, Harvey Mason and Ernie Watts became part of the musical landscape for five years. Eric Clapton, Jeff Beck, George Benson, Al Jarreau, Joe Sample, and even Bob Dylan and Joni Mitchell could be seen in the audiences that would pack the house till the wee hours of the morning. From rock to blues to jazz, his diverse music became the foundation of over 3,000 sessions as a young guitarist with a broad spectrum of artists such as Pink Floyd (The Wall), Steely Dan (Aja), Dizzy Gillespie, Sonny Rollins, Joe Henderson, B.B. King, Frank Sinatra, Simon & Garfunkel, Ray Charles, Peggy Lee, Aretha Franklin and Barbra Streisand. Diane Schuur
Vocalist/pianist Diane Schuur is as eclectic as she is brilliant. A longtime disciple of Dinah Washington and other legendary jazz singers of the ‘40s and ‘50s, Schuur has built a stellar career by embracing not only the jazz of her parents’ generation, but also the pop music of her own youth during the late 1950s and ‘60s. In a recording career that spans nearly three decades – and includes two Grammy Awards and three Grammy nominations – Schuur’s music has explored nearly every corner of the 20th century American musical landscape.
Born in Tacoma, Washington, in December 1953, Schuur was blind from birth. She grew up in nearby Auburn, Washington, where her father was a police captain. Nicknamed Deedles at a young age, Schuur discovered the world of jazz via her father, a piano player, and her mother, who kept a formidable collection of Duke Ellington and Dinah Washington records in the house.
She was still a toddler when she learned to sing the Dinah Washington signature song, “What a Difference a Day Makes.” Armed with the rare gift of perfect pitch, Schuur taught herself piano by ear and developed a rich, resonant vocal style early on, as evidenced in a recording of her first public performance at a Holiday Inn in Tacoma when she was ten years old. She received formal piano training at the Washington State School for the Blind, which she attended until age 11. By her early teens, she had amassed her own collection of Washington’s records and looked to the legendary vocalist as her primary inspiration.
Schuur made her first record in 1971, a country single entitled “Dear Mommy and Daddy,” produced by Jimmy Wakely. After high school, she focused on jazz and gigged around the northwest. In 1975, an informal audition with trumpeter Doc Severinson (then the leader of the Tonight Show band) led to a gig with Tonight Show drummer Ed Shaughnessy’s group at the Monterey Jazz Festival. She sang a gospel suite with Shaughnessy’s band in front of a festival audience that included jazz tenor saxophonist Stan Getz, who in turn invited her to participate in a talent showcase at the White House. A subsequent return performance at the White House led to a record deal with GRP, which released Schuur’s debut album, Deedles, in 1984.
Over the next 13 years, Schuur recorded 11 albums on GRP, including two Grammy winners: Timeless (1986) and Diane Schuur and the Count Basie Orchestra (1987). The recording with the Basie Orchestra spent 33 consecutive weeks at No. 1 on the Billboard jazz charts. In 1991, Pure Schuur made the number-one slot on the Contemporary Jazz charts, andHeart To Heart – a 1994 collaborative recording with B.B. King – entered the Billboard charts at No. 1.

Keiko Matsui
Keiko Matsui is a citizen of the world. She tours relentlessly and has brought her music to virtually every corner of the globe. Her music transcends boundary and her unique melting pot of musical influences have garnered her a devout international following. “Music has no borders and it creates a oneness among people,” confides the Japanese born pianist, composer and producer. “There have been many occasions when I have felt like music saved me. There is a connection between my fans and I and together in my music we are sharing harmony.” An activist by nature, Keiko (pronounced Kay-Koe means ‘happy, celebratory child’ in Japanese) has not only used her music to speak to the world but she has lent her voice to causes championed by organizations like The United Nations World Food Programme, the Be March Marrow Registry and The National Donor Program and Marrow Foundation. With over a million and a half albums sold and scores of sold out concerts across the globe, Keiko Matsui is one of the brightest stars in instrumental music. Her free spirit and creative genius have afforded her the luxury to share the stage with everyone from Stevie Wonder and Miles Davis to Hugh Masakela and Bob James. On January 25, 2011 Shanachie Entertainment will release The Road…, Keiko’s long awaited, self produced and 22nd album released in the US.
“Keiko Matsui is beyond category,” states Danny Weiss, VP of Jazz A&R for Shanachie Entertainment. “She is a great jazz player, of course, but her music has such strong classical, world and new age influences that the result is truly unique. But it is in her compositions that Keiko’s genius outshines all others – her amazing melodies are simply breathtaking!”
The Road… is Keiko Matsui’s first new recording in four years and a follow-up to her acclaimed 2007 South African inspired Moyo, which features Hugh Masakela among others. “It is unusual for me to have such a long space between my albums so when I started recording this CD it was like a miracle,” says Keiko. “It is also the first time that I invited my band members from the road who have been going through my survival tour!” The Road… is a riveting collection of timeless, passionate, cathartic, emotional and exotic melodies, lush harmonies and global rhythms. “I have been constantly on the go touring and supporting my family,” shares the strikingly beautiful and introspective single mother of two. “When I started this project I spent a lot of time reflecting on the soul and where it comes from. I am on a new journey and have come this far and I still find that this life is wonderful…even the challenges create a beautiful tapestry and the road continues…” Keiko’s soul searching includes the ethereal shape-shifting title track which set the tone for the cinematic compositions to follow.
One of the most salient and recognizable elements of Keiko Matsui’s music is her gift for crafting memorable melodies, which she describes as a “mirror or reflection of herself at any given moment.’”“I have always wanted to write melodies that stay in people’s hearts like traditional music or classical music, where the music lives on for centuries.” Keiko exhibits her affinity for melody on The Road’s opening track “Secret Pond,” which was inspired by a letter she once received.
“A fan in the US sent me a note and told me that my music brings people back to the roots of their soul,” shares the soft-spoken yet commanding pianist. “His words have stayed with me and this song is about where we all begin our journey in this life.” “Embrace & Surrender” is another song that magnifies Keiko’s unmatched ability to make a song sing and exude tenderness and warmth. Her emotional attachment to the meaning behind this song transcends every note. “Playing this melody I expressed so much emotion that I was in tears. It is about the love that is found in you that is really deep but not carnal. There is something that connects everyone. We all have the ability to send love and receive love and we are all surrounded by a love from the universe.”
A high point on The Road… is Keiko Matsui’s collaboration with revered Cameroonian bassist, guitarist and vocalist Richard Bona, who co-wrote the songs “Nguea Wonja” and “Touching Peace.” “Richard is such a great artist and I believe that he has a special spiritual element that he connects to that when he plays and when he sings I feel like I am hearing an angel,” declares Keiko. The spirited dance-inducing “Nguea Wonja” (which means to ‘take pride in the road you are traveling on your journey’) and the divine ballad “Touching Peace” affirm the virtuosic brilliance and versatility of both artists. Bona also joins Keiko on the impressionistic “Falcon’s Wing,” which shines light on the pianist’s classical influences. “I love falcons,” she says. “I saw a beautiful picture of one that inspired me and following the song “Secret Pond” it was a natural progression to take flight and fly.”
Keiko Matsui is a consummate artist and freely at home in any musical context. As The Road…demonstrates she borrows from such diverse idioms as jazz, classical, rock, blues, world music, traditional music of the world and beyond. Keiko draws upon the appeal of all of these influences on “Bohemian Concerto,” an exhilarating show stopping number and the final song she composed for The Road… “This song came to me at the last minute while I was on a three-week Eastern European tour,” explains Keiko. “I had written the melody in a notebook but somehow the song just stayed in my head and I was singing it the entire tour. I could hear the string arrangements and everything. I felt like something was telling me to record this song.”
The road of life is sometimes circular and Keiko Matsui returns to her early beginnings on The Road…, joining forces with one of the first musicians she ever recorded with, drummer Vinnie Colaiuta, who appears on four of the album’s tracks, including the deeply moving “Awakening.” “It was great to finally connect with him. He was the first drummer I recorded with in the 80s along with Nathan East when I was a student. The two also later joined me on my US recording debut A Drop of Water. “Awakening” also features saxophonist Kirk Whalum, who Keiko records with for the first time on The Road… He also appears on the song “Affirmation.” “His music and spirituality are always connected,” says Keiko. He is wonderful.” The idea of spirituality and music being intertwined is a recurring theme in Keiko Matsui’s music. She has often said that when she creates music it is as if she is offering her music as a prayer.
Keiko’s composing ritual is one of patience and dedication. “I always set aside special time for composing charts,” explains the dynamic artist. “I sit in front of the piano in a quiet space and wait to hear a melody come from somewhere. It may take all day but when I hear it I catch it and take note.” Although Keiko has always had a connection to music it was not something she originally thought she would do professionally until she came to the US and experienced the responses from the audiences. She does not come from a musical family; her father was a businessman and her mother had an affinity for traditional Japanese dance but both supported her musical endeavors once they gleaned the happiness it brought their daughter.
Keiko Matsui made her US recording debut in 1987 with the recording A Drop of Water. Under Northern Lights followed in 1989 and her subsequent albums of note include, No Borders (1990), Night Waltz(1991), Cherry Blossom (1992), Doll (1994), Sapphire (1995) and Dream Walk (1996), which remained on the Billboard Contemporary Jazz Chart for over 15 months and further cemented her reputation as a force to reckon with. In 1997, she launched a tour dedicated to raising awareness of breast cancer, and released a four-song CD entitled A Gift of Hope that benefited the Y-Me Breast Cancer Organization. Her music was prominently featured in Say It, Fight It, Cure It, a Lifetime special profiling several courageous women battling breast cancer. “My fans come from all backgrounds and I have been approached by various foundations to join in their efforts. When I hear of a cause that resonates with me that I can dedicate my music to then I am always willing. It is my way to show gratitude and give back,” states Keiko Matsui. In 1999, the pianist performed at “A Golden Moment,” a skating concert featuring Olympic figure skaters Kristi Yamaguchi, Tara Lipinski, Ekaterina Gordeeva, and Katarina Witt, which benefited the Susan G. Komen Foundation. 1998 saw the release of her album Full Moon And The Shrine which was accompanied by the acclaimed PBS-TV special Keiko Matsui: Light Above The Trees. In 2000, the special earned Keiko a National Smooth Jazz Award for “Best Long-Form Video Achievement” and she was honored with an award for “Best Female Artist.” She claimed the award again in 2001. During this time she released the poignant recording The Ring, which was meant to communicate a message of peace, compassion, and humanity to listeners around the world.
Keiko Matsui’s CD Deep Blue (2001) topped Billboard’s Contemporary Jazz charts for three consecutive weeks. Keiko is the first Japanese artist to achieve this honor. In 2003 she enjoyed success with her recording The Piano, which featured reinventions of some of her most loved original works. In 2004 the title track of Keiko’s Wildflower was used to support the United Nations World Food Programme’s efforts in Africa. “I decided I wanted to support the WFP after learning about the tremendous problems in Africa and how humanitarian assistance can change people’s lives for the better,” shares the activist.” Keiko has also collaborated with A3M (Asians for Miracle Marrow Matches) in numerous charity concerts. In addition proceeds from her 2001 mini-CD, A Gift of Life, went to The National Donor Program and Marrow Foundation in support of A3M. In December 2009, the highly sought-after pianist was asked to put together a Christmas show at the Blue Note club in Tokyo, which was a major success and in November 2010 she made her highly anticipated debut at the Blue Note in NY, which was sold out. Keiko also recently recorded and toured with Bob James on a 4 Hand Piano project that will be released in 2011. Keiko depth as a composer has also allowed her to contribute music to soundtracks in Japan, the U.S. and Russia.
Fortunately for us The Road continues for Keiko Matsui and she is inviting us along for the ride. “Music, touring and recording are not like a job for me but more like my calling. It is these experiences that energize me,” says Keiko. “ I look forward to sharing the oneness with people when I am on the road. We all need to stop fighting and come together. Music has a magical power that brings people together and I am hoping my music will help to bring harmony to the earth. This album is so special and important to me. I hope my music can reach inside my fans and touch and move their souls.”

Tizer Quartet
Driven by an explosive mix of jazz, rock, classical, jam band influences and Afro Cuban and world rhythms, Downbeat—the first studio album by TIZER, a multi-cultural band led by Boulder, CO native, keyboardist/composer Lao Tizer—throws down a high powered collection of 12 brand-new originals on this scintillating release of fresh instrumental music from one of today’s rising stars of the world-fusion genre. Establishing themselves in the contemporary jazz world over the past few years, TIZER has spurred comparisons of a modern twist to the 70s and early 80s heyday of jazz fusion, when trailblazing ensembles like Return To Forever, Mahavishnu Orchestra and Weather Report set the aesthetic standard.
Truly embodying the title and spirit of his 2007 solo album Diversify, Lao assembled a group of veteran world-class musicians to create a dynamic rich with new melodic, harmonic and improvisational possibilities. Co-produced by Lao and guitarist Jeff Kollman (GlennHughes, UFO, Chad Smith’s Bombastic Meatbats), the eclectic set includes five original compositions by Lao and numerous collaborations with his cohorts, including the first single “World In Rhythm,” co-written with Emmy winner and Grammy nominated guitarist Chieli Minucci, best known as founder and leader of Special EFX.
Over the past few years, TIZER—a 2011 nominee for “Jazz Group of the Year”–has taken their multi-faceted world fusion vibe around the globe, galvanizing thousands at events including the Java Jazz Festival in Jakarta, the Joy of Jazz Festival in Johannesburg, the Dubai Jazz Festival, Barbados Jazz Festival, the Caribbean Sea Jazz Festival and the Festival International Providencia Jazz in Santiago, Chile. In addition to their usual whirlwind of U.S. dates, their 2012 schedule in support of Downbeat includes the Jarasum International Jazz Festival in South Korea and four shows in Russia. While Lao was a “Best New Jazz Artist” nominee in 2002 and Diversify spent many weeks on the Billboard Contemporary Jazz chart, TIZER has a multi-genre, multi-national appeal that expands beyond just jazz enthusiasts. Their diverse resume includes performance slots alongside Zappa Plays Zappa, Jethro Tull, Isaac Hayes, Al Jarreau, Spyro Gyra, George Benson, Soulive, Babyface, Bruce Hornsby and Robin Thicke.
Those who haven’t yet experienced TIZER’s intensity, expansive arrangements and exciting soloing in concert got the next best thing with the group’s 2010 debut release TIZER Live, which captured the vibrant interaction of what Lao calls “the ultimate cultural and musical melting pot”; Italian-American New Yorker Minucci, African American violin great Karen Briggs (Yanni, Stanley Clarke, Chaka Khan) and Cuban born drummer/percussionist Raul Pineda (Michel Camilo, Chucho Valdes), in addition to Kollman, multi-instrumentalist Steve Nieves (Kenny Loggins, Loggins & Messina, Jagno) and Lao himself, who grew up in Boulder, Colorado. Bassist Rufus Philpot, who joined TIZER after that recording, hails from London. The concert recording at the world renowned Musicians Institute in Hollywood was TIZER’s very first live performance as a group; it included fresh interpretations of seven songs from Lao’s earlier recordings, including Diversify and Golden Soul (2001).
Downbeat marks the first time that Lao has co-produced one of his albums. Loving the big sound of the band and all the intricacies it has in the live setting inspired his simple concept when it came time to write and record the album. “Producing and mixing with Jeff, my goal was to give listeners a taste of the energy TIZER creates in the live setting, so most of the recording was done live in the studio,” he says. “While no solo on disc can capture what happens onstage, we wanted Downbeat to have the same blend and balance via strong, detailed arrangements and studio production. It all starts with a completely live rhythm section—drums, bass, percussion, keys—and that translates to an organic foundation to build from.”

Michaela Rabitsch & Robert Pawlik
Michaela Rabitsch, singer, composer and Austria’s only female top jazz trumpet player is called a modern day female Chet Baker by the US magazine Jazzscene. Michaela and her ingenious partner, composer and incredible fluid guitarist Robert Pawlik present “Voyagers“, their 4th common CD and a program, inspired by their numerous tours of the last years through Europe, Asia and Africa.
The (musical) impressions are reflected in their compositions and guarantee a deversified and multi-variant musical experience. (National) musical elements of different countries or ethnic groups influence the compositions or inspire the tunes.
Whether with African rhythms or flamenco touch, Cuban fire or Balkan grooves – every song has that certain something, without denying the hallmarks of both leaders.
Recent tours to Morocco, Senegal, India and Malaysia led to cooperations with local musicians and to contacts with West African, Arab or Berber musical cultur, like the Gnaoua music of the Berber from Essaouira or the sophisticated Indian music.
Under the motto, diversity instead of simplemindedness they pick off the most interesting elements and inspirations from different musical cultures and contrast them with their own musical background and create a refreshing new musical melange.
From Austria they come and this trumpet/guitar led crew just might conquer the world with their sound. (Chris Spector, Midwest Record Recap, USA

Dominique Di Piazza With Beyond & Blues Quartet
Dominique Di Piazza was born in Lyon, France, with Sicilian ancestry and a gypsy stepfather. He started playing electric bass in 1979. After some time, he managed to free himself from the pervasive influence that Jaco Pastorius had over most bassists at the time, by creating his own style. Self-taught, he added an extra high string to his 4-string bass and created his own technique of using the right-hand thumb, index and middle fingers. This unique approach enabled a virtuosity and style that is quite unusual in the world of bass. A defining example is the track Marie a flagship piece for solo bass from the 90s, found on the album Que alegria by John McLaughlin.
This right hand style gave birth to the four-finger picking technique later popularized in Europe and the US by several new-generation bassists including Matthew Garrison, Adam Nitti and Hadrien Feraud. Dominique’s great knowledge of bebop, his gypsy and neo-classical influences, his lyrical style and his advanced harmonic concept have combined to make him one of the most innovative bassists in the world today.
Dominique started his career in 1982 at the Hot Club in Lyon with guitarist Michel Pérez. In 1986 he moved to Paris and began touring with violinist Didier Lockwood, drummer André Ceccarelli and pianist Gordon Beck. The following year he toured Europe with Gil Evans and the Big Bang Lumière de Laurent Cugny, a group that was immortalized on the Santander album, winner of the Prix de l’Académie Charles-Cros and in 1989 he recorded a trio album called Padre, with Jean-Pierre Como and Stéphane Huchard.
In 1991, Dominique joined the John McLaughlin Trio along with percussionist Trilok Gurtu. After a world tour of over 300 concerts, the album Que alegria was released in 1992. McLaughlin was then quoted as saying of DiPiazza: “His talent is immense—he’s one of the best bassists in the world.”
The same year, Dominique recorded with pianist Michel Petrucianni on the album The First, with Michel’s brother Philippe Petrucianni on guitar and Victor Jones on drums. In 2000, the Front Page Trio was created with Bireli Lagrene on guitar and Dennis Chambers on drums. They toured Europe and released a self-titled album (Frontpage) that scored them a Victoire de la Musique award for Best Jazz Album of 2001.
From 1990 to 2005, Dominique worked with a wide array of artists including Michael Blass, Bruno Castellucci, Giuseppe Continenza, Vic Juris, Gene Bertoncini, Yves Carbonne, Michael Manring, Jeff Gardner, Victor Wooten, Derico Watson, Danny Gottlieb and Donald Harrison. In 2005/06 he hit the road again, this time in Reunion, Mauritius, Madagascar, and ten other African countries, with a pianist from Reunion named Meddy Gerville, guitarist Jean-Marie Ecay, and drummer Horacio “el Negro” Hernandez. This collaboration led to the Jazz Amwin CD, which introduced the “Maloya Jazz” style (combining jazz with traditional music from Reunion) to a wider global audience.
In 2006, Dominique went to India to record a CD (Samjanitha, 2008) with the great Indian mandolin player U. Shrinivas, as well as Debashish Bhattacharya, Selvaganesh and Zakir Hussain. Following that he played on Antonio Farao’s album, Woman’s Perfume, alongside André “Dédé” Ceccarelli on drums.
In 2008, John McLaughlin called upon Dominique’s talents once again for a European tour with The 4th Dimension, also including Gary Husband on keys and percussion, and Mark Mondésir on drums. Together the band played more than 30 concerts all across Europe and released a DVD Live @ Belgrade. Another show featured Dominique with McLaughlin in India, in a group called The Floating Point, which included Ranjit Barot, Louis Banks, Shashank, Naveen Kumar and Shankar Mahadevan.
Around the same time, Dominique assembled the Di Piazza Trio with Brazilian guitarist Nelson Veras and drummer Manhu Roche. The trio’s album, Princess Sita, was released in the USA in August of 2008.
From 2009 to 2011, Dominique criss-crossed the world with a wide variety of artists.

Dominique has also been working with a popular young gypsy guitarist named Brady Winterstein (and his uncle Hono), and they released an album in 2011 called Happy together .
Dominique has designed a special bridge (as well as a bass) with luthier Mike Sabre, which makes it possible to obtain a “fretless” sound on a fretted bass. This was first featured on the track « Seven up » from the 1993 CD Wait and See by Michael Blass.
For several years, Dominique has been teaching at the Music Academy International (M.A.I.) at Nancy, France, and also gives master classes around the world. Transcriptions of his playing appear in the book Bass Soloing Concepts by Chuck Sher and Marco Johnson. His composition “Living Hope” is included in The European Real Book.
Dominique’s sincerity, his unique style and his openness to music from around the world make him one of the most highly regarded musicians on the international scene.
Dominique plays on Marbass amps. “For a long time, I’ve been looking for a bass amp that won’t color my sound” says Dominique. “And most of the good amps are bulky and hard to transport. But bravo, Marco—with my Little Mark Tube head and Traveler 102P cabinet, I have both uncolored sound and portability at the same time!”

Jeff Kollman
Jeffrey James Kollman is an American guitarist born best known for his powerful melodic electric guitar playing, fusing elements of jazz harmony into his hybrid melodic hard rock / funk style.
Kollman has been voted in in the Top 50 greatest guitarist of all time in magazines such as Young Guitar (Japan) and Guitar On The Edge (UK) amongst others. Kollman resides with his family in Los Angeles, California. Kollman started with the guitar at age 12 and played along side brother Tommy Kollman. Kollman first got into soundtracking at the age of 14 through the hard core punk band ‘The Stain’, headed by drummer Jon Stainbrook. The Stain’s songs were used for FOX Sports, MTV Sports, Extreme Sports with surfers, snowboarders and skateboarders. The Stain’s recordings have been featured on ESPN, Disney, FOX, and MTV and in commercials for Vision Street Wear, Mountain Dew, and Jose Cuervo. Thereafter, he formed heavy metal group VXN with vocalist Bryce Barnes, brother Tommy Kollman on drums and bassist Nep Sindel. The band name changed to EDWIN DARE with the addition of Kevin Chown on bass. EDWIN DARE had moderate success in U.S. and Japan from 1992-1995. Kollman dismantled the group in 1995 and relocated to Arizona for two years.
During this period he honed his studio session chops having done sessions with Nashville piano great Matt Rollings, Patti Labelle, Linda McCartney, Lyle Lovitt and Wyman Tisdale. He then relocated to Los Angeles, California in 1997 where he teamed up with drummer Shane Gaalaas (Michael Schenker) to form the hard rock fusion trio, COSMOSQUAD with MSG bassist, Barry Sparks. In 1998 he appeared playing bass on the European G3 tour with Micheal Schenker. 2 weeks after the MSG tour and just by coincidence, Kollman hooked up with UFO_(band) singer Phil Mogg, who at this time was looking for the next UFO_(band) guitarist. The referral came from Mike Varney of Shrapnel Records. The end result was the release Mogg/Way ‘Chocolate Box’ with UFO_(band) band members Pete Way, Paul Raymond and (AC/DC, Dio) drummer, Simon Wright.
At this time Phil decided not to use the UFO_(band) name as it would have created a potential legal battle with Michael Schenker, whom also had rights to the name. As a producer, Kollman has worked with musicians such as Glenn Hughes (Trapeze, Deep Purple, Black Country Communion), co writing, producing and mixing the ‘Song In The Key Of Rock’ album, as well as HTP 2 with Rainbow vocalist Joe Lynn Turner and Glenn Hughes. Kollman co produced Mogg /Way ‘Chocolate Box’ with Mike Varney. Other credits include contemporary jazz pianist Lao Tizer, which Kollman actively writes and tours with. Jeff Kollman is the guitarist and co-writer for his funk-rock group Chad Smith’s Bombastic Meatbats featuring Red Hot Chili Peppers drummer Chad Smith. The band has two releases ‘Meet The Meatbats’ and ‘More Meat’. He is also the owner of Marmaduke Records. He has 15 releases on the label. Kollman’s other groups include Cosmosquad, Crumb Bros., the aforementioned Mogg/Way, JKB (Jeff Kollman Band) and Mogg & The Sign Of 4. Kollman also does quite a bit of Film and Television writing & recording sessions playing guitar, bass and lead vocals.

Ezra Brown
Gospel, blues, jazz, r&b, soul, hip-hop—language of the human experience. Ezra Brown’s music speaks this language. His horn serves as his translator, becoming a voice that speaks in tongues transcending any language barrier. Ezra’s sound — a culmination of southern comfort and urban grit, gives birth to a style that is new, yet familiar. This sound speaks from the soul. A sound Ezra calls Soul Muzik. When he picks up his horn, sound is transformed into a language that enters the soul producing an experience that is pure music. An experience that goes beyond sound becoming something that is felt. Music that translates the human experience for all to understand.
Ezra Brown uses his musical style to transform a mere story to a lyrical moment. This style makes him a much sought after force among his contemporaries. As saxophonist, keyboardist, music director, and arranger, he has collaborated with a broad spectrum of industry greats. Kirk Lightsey
Lightsey had piano instruction from the age of five and studied piano and clarinet through high school. After service in the Army, Lightsey worked in Detroit and California in the 1960s as an accompanist to singers. He also worked with jazz musicians such as Yusef Lateef, Betty Carter, Pharoah Sanders, Bobby Hutcherson, Sonny Stitt, Chet Baker, and Kenny Burrell. From 1979 to 1983 he toured with Dexter Gordon and was a member of The Leaders in the late 1980s. During the 1980s he led several sessions of his own, including duets with pianist Harold Danko. In the 1980s and since he has worked with Jimmy Raney, Clifford Jordan, Woody Shaw, David Murray, Joe Lee Wilson, Adam Taubitz, Harold Land and Gregory Porter.
He is also an accomplished flautist and occasionally doubles on flute in live performances.
Razak Rahman
Way back in 1971, Razak Rahman was already an established jazz star, when at age 12, he made his first appearance on the first ever talent time contest (Bakat TV) over Malaysian TV and came out the champ. He wiped the judges off their feet serenading on his clarinet the song “Dark Eyes”.In the same year he was taken to London to perform at the Malaysian Hall for the Malaysian students there. It was then, that he was offered a scholarship to study music at the Royal College of Music, London. When Sir Duke Ellington visited Kuala Lumpur with his Orchestra in the same year, Razak was called to make an appearance. On the onset of the song “Lullaby of Birdland” Razak was prompted to improvise a solo on his clarinet. This was when Razak captured the Duke’s heart and ultimately a genuine interest to adopt him as his son to groom him as a member of his orchestra. He has recorded two albums under the BMG label, namely “Symbolic” & “Solstis”. Musical fashions changed several times in the ensuing years, and personal problems took him out of the limelight on more than one occasion; but Razak Rahman never stopped being a star. His very personalized sound on the tenor saxophone heavily influenced by Stan Getz, made Razak a paragon of the cool.
Like any other born talented musician, he could also rise to the occasion in the more heated atmosphere of the many jam sessions that he undertook amidst famous names in the industry on many instances. Razak has shown a talent matched by few others and exceeded by none in taking on challenging projects without sacrificing his personality. One of these was when he took to the stage and held the audience at the North Sea Jazz Festival in the Hague. Any tenor, alto or clarinet musician coming of age after 1971, even those who do not reflect his influence, had to be impressed with Razak’s skills. He had a natural technique. He didn’t get it out of any books.
This was when God had somewhat entered his being, to allow him to excite listeners in a way no one else could. It came from being a part of the scene, but in his own unique way.One aspect of his genius was to make it sound like anybody can do it. But we know better than that, it takes years and years of stick-to-it-veness, practicing to hone that sound to that velvety fluency. And Razak as a person could back that sound up with a soul that could get him into and out of some interesting improvisational places. Musical style and personality are not necessarily a continuation of the same thing. Most people are what they sound like but then there are tremendously important musicians who take the on-the-bandstand experience too lightly. Being on the bandstand is like being at the Wailing Wall, it’s as reverential an experience as one is likely to have.
Yet some musicians who could play would just be horrible on the bandstand. It’s difficult to understand why they’d do that. One has to show the greatest respect for the audience. You would have heard of Razak’s eccentricities and moodiness, and it is often said about Razak that he could talk anybody out of anything, but that was a side of him that people rarely saw on the first introduction. Yet when he performs he is as dignified as the music he plays. Razak acquired his basic music education and skills from his late father, a respected flutist and blower in the musicians fraternity till today. Razak started showing interest since he was nine. His late father served the Radio Malaya for a number of years under Alfonso Soliano, his brother in law who was the pioneer musician of the RTM Orchestra at the time.
Razak’s late mother Erena Soliano @ Abaidah Abdullah, also fondly known during her era as “Queenie” was also a brilliant pianist and jazz singer. She was one of the pioneer entertainers during the British Colonial days to have performed at Selangor club and was renowned for her showmanship and immaculate performances. Razak has performed in albums of a long list of local Malaysian artistes throughout his career. As a sessionist he has been invited to perform in the past years with many legendary international artistes from the world over some of whom are, Shirley Bassey, Chick Corea, David Sanborn, Steve Thornton, Eric Marienthal and the list goes on. He served the country’s National Broadcasting Station (RTM) as a member of their orchestra under the lead of Dato Mokhzani Ismail for a good 10 years. He is now a full time free-lance professional musician and Artiste. He has played to the audience of ministers, dignitaries, royals and is a popular feature at private functions and weddings. Anyone who has been privileged to watch him deliver his music will not leave to feel less satisfied and entertained.

Chris Ong, Danny James & The Colour Codes
Chris Ong began as an aspiring guitar player amidst the demands of a modernizing Singaporean society. After successive strokes of serendipity, he sailed into the music scene with his crafty blues-rock solos and intricate speed riffs. He rose to prominence in the 1980s as the lead guitarist of progressive rock band Heritage. Interest in the Singaporean group swiftly escalated, eventually prompting local record labels to work with them. With an initiation the band released a ten-track album titled ‘Boy Becomes Man’, landing them as the opening act for Bob Dylan at his concert in Singapore. During his career with Heritage, Chris Ong toured throughout Southeast Asia influencing and simultaneously inspiring fellow musicians to accomplish their musical endeavors. After leaving to recollect his roots in blues-rock, he joined the New Vintage Band which self-produced two live albums that featured cover songs performed at underground clubs.
Chris Ong is known for his calm and composed persona juxtaposed with his signature vibrato squeal and stands among local musicians as a living legend. Remaining as the elusive ‘guitarist for hire’, he performed on stage at Singapore’s Esplanade Theatre with old friend Ernie Koh (Pest Infested) for a reunion concert in 2008, making it his latest public appearance to date.
Chris continues to amaze his audience with his cool riffs and vintage licks. He played at the KL International Jazz Festival 2013 and is coming back for the 2014 edition. He would be on stage with UK based young guitarist Danny James and singer Ronan.
Danny James is a young up and coming blues guitar player from the UK, inspired by the likes of Jimi Hendrix and Stevie Ray Vaughan.
Roger “KEMP” Biwandu
Born in a cab in Bordeaux on December 25 1972, with roots in Zaire (now named Democratic Republic of Congo), Roger “Kemp” Biwandu fell in love with drumming at the end of the 70′s. He was influenced by bands such as the Police and the Californian band Toto, whose drummers Steward Copeland and Jeff Porcaro revolutionised drumming at the time.
Soon after, nicknamed Kemp after his idol the genius American basketball player SHawn Kemp, also started playing rugby with US Cenon RD, a sport which will remain a permanent feature in our life. He still practices with the Lormont Club, a second division club in Borderaux.
Roger started touring at an early age with famous French artists such as Bireli Lagrene, Pierre Vassiliu and Jacques Higelin, and was also a valued member of local bands such as Post image. He has also worked with Tribal Jam as a musical director.
FOllowing his notable contribution to Chic Hot, he quickly made a name for himself at a national level, and was subsequently approached by two other key jazz fusion bands, Sixun and Ultramarine, as a substitute to their original drummers Paco Sery and Mokhtar Sambar.
Recording sessions with artists such as the Hansons, Narada, Michael Walden, Chris de Burgh, I Muvrini, Carol King, Keziah Jones and the great guitartist Jeff Beck, raised his international profile. Four tours with the legendary and sadly missed Joe Zawinul confirmed his status as an international artist, the last of which in October/ November 2006 also involved the guest appearance of the no less famous Bobby McFerrin.
Roger has also played with Frank McComb, Dee Dee Bridgewater, Marcus Miller, Michel Jonasz, John Beasley, Andy Narell, Mark Tuner, Womack & Womack, the late John Stubblefield and the late James.
Alongside Steward Copeland and Jeff Porcaro many other genius have influenced his career, just as Jeff “Tain” Watts, Vinnie Colaiuta, the All Blacks, James Taylor, Phillip D. “Fish” Fisher, Wayner Shorter, Omar Hakim, Stade Tpulousain, Brandon & Wynton Marsalis, Elvin Jones, Tony Williams, Kenny Kirkland and Sting to name but a few.
Along with a world tour from November 2005 to July 2009 with the great Malian singer Salif Keita, Roger realised a long standing dream with the release of his own album, Influence, an album in which Roger expresses his multiple talents as a jazz drummer and composer, not to mention his love of rugby, an underlying theme in his album.
With From Palmer, his new album celebrating the neighbourhood of his childhood, Roger continues to follow in the footsteps of his masters and friens, Jeff “Tain” Watts and Brandford & Wynton Marsalis.

Steve Thornton
Born and raised in Brooklyn, New York, Steve is the second youngest of fourteen children. At the tender age of seven, Steve heard Mongo Santamaria playing Herbie Hancock’s “Watermelon Man”. He was so inspired by the legendary drummer that he taught himself to play the congas by listening to the album over and over again.
In 1968, Steve formed his first group, THE YOUNG EXPLOSIVES, a 4 piece Latin-jazz ensemble. They performed on local television station Channel 5′s “Inside Bedford-Stuyvesant” , appeared in school talent shows and at the Appollo Theatre.
In 1969, Steve met Mongo Santamaria at Club Beacon on 111 Street and Lennox Avenue. When he told Mongo how much he admired him, Mongo challenged Steve to play congas with his band. When fifteen year old Steve started wailing away on three congas, Mongo got so excited he sat with him and they played out the entire set together. For Steve, it was a dream come true.
Throughout high school, Steve performed with his band and recorded salsa with other local bands, but his first professional appearance was with Jon Lucien’s 1972 national tour. Since that auspicious beginning, Steve has played non-stop with some of the best in the business. He played for the Brazilian band of pianist Dom Salvador and percussionist Dom Um Romao and than went on to become the conga player for Harry Belafonte. He worked for Harry for four years, appearing on his record,T.V. shows and tours.
Norman Connors introduced Steve to jazz. Never one to set still, Steve has since performed live and made recordings with some of the most well known jazz artist in the world, including Miles Davis, Dizzy Gillespie, Roy Ayers, Grover Washington Jr., McCoy Tyner, Herbie Hancock, Sadao Watanabe, Tania Maria and David Sanborn.
Latin, Jazz, R&B, Brazilian and African music have all felt the magic of Steve’s touch. They have also deeply influenced him. Steve is now arranging, composing and producing his own blend of music, incorporating and expanding on everything he has learned in his musical sojourn. His rich, multi-layered music has a unique sound, backed by the most contagious, uplifting beats to which you’ll ever move your feet
Bassment Syndicate
Born in June 24th 2010 in Laundry, a music venue in the great city of Kuala Lumpur Malaysia, the Bassment Syndicate has become one of Southeast Asia’s best kept secrets. Blurring the lines of Jazz, Soul, Hip-Hop, and R&B, Bassment Syndicate has dazzled audiences with their sincere and fresh approach to sonic entertainment.
Bassment Syndicate is made up of four members. Omar Ibrahim, the youngest member of the ensemble was born in Chicago and relocated back to Malaysia at a young age. A recent graduate of the acclaimed International College of Music (ICOM), Omar has already become one of the top drummers in the region. He has been a member of bands that have opened for great acts such as Michael Buble’.
Hiran Benton, keyboardist, was born in New Zealand. He found his way to Malaysia as a visiting artist performing in some of the top clubs in Kuala Lumpur. After a short stint of performances with his band, he settled down in Kuala Lumpur. As an accomplished Classical and Jazz pianist, Hiran found work quickly throughout the region supporting some of the top local and regional talent.
Marques Young, trombonist and vocalist, resided in New York City as student enrolled in the prestigious Juilliard School. While pursuing a Master’s Degree in Jazz Studies, Marques won a job in one of Asia’s top symphony orchestras, exercising his ability to perform in a variety of styles and genres.

Once Omar, Hiran, Marques and Koh Keng Hui shared a stage together, the chemistry was so musically overwhelming that a band had to be formed. Since its conception, The Bassment Syndicate has remained active performing in the top venues in Singapore and Malaysia. They have also appeared in music festivals including the International Jazz Day Festival, Ambon Jazz Festival, One Thousand Bands United, and Malaysia’s first Hip Hop Music Festival, Raising The Bar.

In France, with Elene Dee and David Berkman for Lyrics on Pat Metheny’s music; in Russia with the Blues & Beyond Quartet (Sébastien Charlier, Yannick Robert and Yoann Schmidt) and the album La Danse du chat; with 4 Essential (with Thierry Maillard, Debora Seffer and Yoann Schmidt) for an album and festival shows; with Antonio Farao and André “Dédé” Ceccarelli; in the electro-jazz group Synopsis with Eric Sempe and Felix Sabal Lecco, and a CD called Rebirth; in a trio with Francis Lockwood and Fred Sicard on Tribute to Hendrix; with the Petrucciani Reunion quartet with Philippe Petrucciani, Nathalie Blanc and Manhu Roche on the CD Este Mundo.
In Spain, with Ximo Tebar, Donald Edwards and Jim Ridl; also the flamenco-jazz guitarist Chema Vilchez, with Jeff Balard and Alex Acuna; with singer Maria de Medeiros and gypsy-flamenco musician Raimundo Amador; in Turkey, with bağlama player Zeki Çağlar Namlı and on the Face to Face CD, and Buzuki Orhan Osman alongside his old friend Trilok Gurtu; in Ireland, with Mike Nielsen and Paul Wertico; in Italy with Alberto Iovene and Manhu Roche on the CD Wired Along; in Norway, in a duo with guitarist Hallgeir Pedersen; in Russia with Andrei Bodnartchouk and the group Made in France; and in India with Ranjit Barot’s group which included Scott Kinsey and Tim Garland, releasing an album called Bada Boom.
